Avancer par sauts

More French phrases using ‘un saut’ : a jump, a leap (also  a waterfall):

Avancer/progesser par sauts : To go forward in stages
Se lever d’un saut : To jump or leap up
Prendre quelqu’un à saut de lit : To find somebody just out of bed
Faire le saut : To take the plunge
Faire le grand saut : To die, to pass on
Faire un saut à la banque : To drop in at the bank

‘Un saut-de-lit’ is a negligée
‘Un saut-de-loup’ (lit. ‘a wolf’s leap’) a (wide) ditch
‘Un saut-de-mouton’ is a flyover BUT:
‘Le saute-mouton’ (lit. the jump-sheep) is (to play) leapfrog
