\u2018When I read poetry’: in memory of Mark\u00a0Strand<\/a><\/h2>\n

I am sad because the great American poet Mark Strand<\/a> has died.<\/p>\n

Among the tributes to him in the last few days was this, from an interview with\u00a0The Paris Review<\/a>: The Art of Poetry No 77 (1998).<\/em><\/p>\n

The words belong to Strand. I have merely reshaped them on the page.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When I read poetry<\/p>\n

I want to feel myself<\/p>\n

suddenly larger…<\/p>\n

in touch with –<\/p>\n

or at least close to –<\/p>\n

what I deem magical,<\/p>\n

astonishing.<\/p>\n

I want to experience<\/p>\n

a kind of wonderment.<\/p>\n

And when you report back<\/p>\n

to your own daily world<\/p>\n

after experiencing the strangeness<\/p>\n

of a world sort of recombined<\/p>\n

and reordered in the depths<\/p>\n

of a poet’s soul,<\/p>\n

the world looks fresher somehow.<\/p>\n

Your daily world<\/p>\n

has been taken out of context.<\/p>\n

It has the voice of the poet<\/p>\n

written all over it,<\/p>\n

for one thing,<\/p>\n

but it also seems suddenly more alive…<\/p>\n
