Du dit au fait…

Two more French expressions for you:

Du dit au fait, il y a un grand trait :
Literally: From speech to action is a long gap:
Fine words butter no parsnips.

Trop parler nuit, trop gratter cuit :
Literally: Too much talking harms, too much scratching burns:
Least said, soonest mended.

If, like me, you thought that ‘nuit’ meant ‘night’ you are usually right, but here it is taken from the verb ‘nuire’ which means to harm.

Sayings taken from: ‘Don’t toss Granny in the Begonias: Faut pas Pousser Mémé dans les Bégonias’ by Marie-Hélène Claudel-Gilly and Primrose Arnander.
