‘The Little Fish’ by Anthony de Mello from ‘The Song of the Bird’

“Excuse me,” said an ocean fish, “You are older than I, so can you tell me where to find this thing they call the ocean?”

“The ocean,” said the older fish, “is the thing you are in now.”

“Oh, this? But this is water. What I’m seeking is the ocean,” said the disappointed fish as he swam away to search elsewhere.

“Excusez-moi,” a dit le poisson de la mer. “Vous êtes plus agé que moi, donc peut-être vous pouvez me dire où est cette chose qu’on appelle la mer  ?”

“Mais la mer,” a dit le poisson plus agé, “c,est ici  ; vous nagez là-dedans.”

“Oh, cela  ? Mais cela est de l’eau. La chose que je cherche c’est la mer,” a dit le petit poisson, deçu. Et il a nagé en direction opposée pour continuer de chercher ailleurs.
