Le rez-de-chausée

Un fait divers : a (short) news item; ‘La une à midi’ : if you know that ‘la une’ is the leading news item you will know that it can be at midi or at any other time of day. Or on the front page of a newspaper.

‘Le rez-de-chausée’ (pronounced: ray-de-shosay) is ‘the ground floor’. This can be useful in a lift (‘un ascenceur’). Especially if it is a lift in France.

‘Renvoyer l’ascenseur’ (literally: ‘to send back the lift’): ‘to return the favour’.
