Please e-mail with any comments on France or French. Thank you to Angela G.  for pointing out that ‘front’ is a ‘false friend’: ‘le front’ in French means ‘the forehead’ and ‘front’ in my Concise Oxford English Dictionary lists 17 different meanings, perhaps the most usual meaning is the opposite of ‘back’.
